Help Us Collect Bat Data!
Boone County Conservation District is monitoring bat populations in the area. We need help from everyday citizens in recording bat calls with a provided bat detector.
Participants will be entered into a drawing to win a FREE bat box!
To participate, follow these steps:
- Download the FREE Echo Meter Touch 2 app
- Email [email protected] to borrow an Echo Meter device. If you haven't already attended a training, we will train you when you pick up the device
- Record bat call data from your own neighborhood
- Send us your recordings
- Return device after 1 week

Why is it important to study bats?
Bats work as “nature's pest control” due to their excellent ability to catch insects like mosquitos which helps to control the mosquito population and keep our arms and legs bite-free during the warmer months! In other countries, this pest control can be extra essential, as the consumption of mosquitoes can reduce the presence of malaria, a disease commonly spread by mosquito bites. Over the years, bats have been subjected to deadly diseases such as white-nose syndrome, loss of forest habitat, and decrease of healthy food populations. By studying these species along with the threats against them, we can help preserve their existence and ensure that they remain happy and healthy little bug eaters.
The Technical Stuff:
How can YOU help?
The first step in understanding our local native bat species is to take into account exactly what kind of bats exist around you. We can do this using recording devices called Echometers which are able to record the soundwaves made through echolocation communication by the bats. These recordings can then be processed through the app “Echo Meter” which allows you to understand what bats are flying around your area! This data can then be used by the Boone County Conservation District to understand the locations our local bats thrive in so that we can continue to protect and preserve their existence.
