Volunteer Job Descriptions:

  • Forest Survey – Our Forest Health Specialist is working on a survey of the tree community at the Earl and Hazel Jones Center for Conservation. This work involves counting, identifying, and measuring a selection of trees at the property. Volunteers will hike off-trail, learn tree ID, and use DBH-tape to record data.
  • Invasive Species Removal – Honeysuckle and multiflora rose are some of the worst offenders in our Boone County Forests. Volunteers will use hand tools to cut down invasive species and collect them into brush piles. BCCDKY staff or other certified applicators will use chemical pesticides to treat stumps.
  • Education Programs – BCCDKY has many education events throughout the year, including outdoor family programs, youth programs, and tabling events. Volunteers will help give out information and educate the public about local conservation.
  • River Sweep - River Sweep is the regional trash clean up program that takes places throughout the Ohio River basin. Volunteers can help with one of our pre-planned events, or organize your own!
  • Stream Monitoring – BCCDKY is involved with multiple different kinds of stream monitoring. Volunteers can get certified as a citizen scientist and get trained to monitor your own stream, or they can assist with macroinvertebrate or hydromodification surveys when BCCDKY is in the field with SD1’s aquatic biology team.
  • Data Analysis – We have accumulated a large volume of acoustic bat data over the years. Volunteers can get trained on the data analysis software and help us identify bats that have been recorded by our citizen scientists.
  • Trail Work – There are about 3 miles of trails at the Earl and Hazel Jones Center for Conservation. Volunteers can help with re-routes, grading, and brush management.
  • Board Supervisor – the Boone County Conservation District is governed by a board of seven elected board supervisors, who meet monthly to oversee the plan of work for the Conservation District. Supervisors must reside in Boone County and serve a 4-year term. Elections take place every two years. BCCDKY board meetings are open to the public and take place on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. Click here for current agenda items.
  • Junior Board – High School students are invited to join our Junior Board! The Junior Board meets periodically throughout the year for stewardship projects, nature exploration, job training, and networking with local conservation professionals. Click here for details.
